Duarte Lôbo was the most important Portuguese composer of his day, having spent more than forty years as choirmaster and musical director at the Cathedral in Lisbon. His Missa pro defunctis (Requiem mass) is influenced by that of the Spanish composer Tomas-Luis de Victoria, with the plainchant on which the work is based appearing in long, sustained notes in the soprano.

Philip van Wilder was a lutenist and the favorite musician of King Henry VIII of England. A native of Flanders, van Wilder achieved considerable wealth and influence as courtier to the English kings Henry and Edward, but was largely forgotten soon after his death. The six Latin motets and one English anthem on the Rose Ensemble CD represent the first time these works have been recorded.

This recording is available from Applause Records (on Snelling Ave. in St. Paul, Minnesota), Cheapo Records in Uptown Minneapolis, Road Runner Records in Minneapolis, Twin-Cities-area Barnes and Noble stores (Har Mar, Galleria, Nicollet Mall), or by mail order direct from the Rose Ensemble.

This recording was engineered by DolceVita Audio.
